On Monday 18th August, emergency services carried out a major multi-agency rescue after a woman fell 40 feet from the Shanganagh cliffs. This complex operation brought together the Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard, the RNLI, the National Ambulance Service, the Rescue 116 helicopter crew, and one of our own, CRITICAL volunteer Dr. Keith, who provided advanced medical support throughout the incident.
Responders faced challenging coastal conditions as they worked to reach and stabilise the casualty. Coast Guard and RNLI teams coordinated a technical rescue, securing the patient before she was hoisted safely to the waiting Rescue 116 helicopter.
The woman sustained serious injuries and required urgent medical intervention. Dr. Keith, travelling with the patient on board the helicopter, delivered advanced prehospital care en route, ensuring vital treatment was provided without delay before transfer to hospital for further management.
Dr. Keith is an emergency medicine doctor with over 20 years of prehospital care experience. A former paramedic, he has trained and worked in emergency medicine and anaesthesia across Ireland and the UK. His academic background includes a BSc in Occupational Therapy, an MSc in Immediate Care, and diplomas in Emergency Medical Technology, paediatrics, and healthcare innovation.
Based in Deansgrange, Dublin, Keith volunteers with CRITICAL across South County Dublin, responding to life-threatening emergencies including cardiac arrests, strokes, choking incidents, chest pain, and serious trauma. He was also involved in setting up ourĀ Deansgrange, a local Community First Responder group that strengthens emergency response capacity in the area.
Teamwork when every second counts.
This rescue highlights the importance of seamless collaboration between voluntary responders and statutory services. Each agency played a crucial role in ensuring the casualty was reached quickly, treated effectively, and transported safely.
At CRITICAL, we are incredibly proud of the contribution our volunteers make alongside Irelandās emergency services. Their expertise, dedication, and commitment ensure that when every second counts, patients receive the very best chance of survival and recovery.
A huge thank you to allĀ involved in this rescue for their professionalism, teamwork and determination.
